Current Priorities
Focus Areas
Our mission is to reduce the number of people suffering from preventable blindness and vision problems in Malawi.
Here we outline what we have identified as the most effective ways we can use your donations to make progress against this goal.
We partner closely with the Lions Sight eye clinic team, based in Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Blanytre, Malawi, the largest and most advanced eye hospital in the country. Our work focuses on supporting this team in delivering care for their patients to make a difference to the people of Malawi. Our plans for the for the upcoming year include:
1. Sourcing Surgical Consumable Items
Fundamentally, without the equipment to perform cataract surgeries, the local surgeons in Malawi will not be able to continue working and the number of people with untreated vision loss due to cataracts will sharply increase.
Sourcing consumables items, such as replacement lenses, is vital to allow the team to continue their work day to day and is key to ensuring patients recieve the care they need. There is no other source of funding for this acquiring this equipment in Malawi outside of charities. We use your donations to purchase consumables from suppliers around the world, as well as arranging and organising the transport of donations from organisations in the UK.
2. Funding Outreach Camps and Training
We are working closely with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital eye team in Malawi to fund outreach camps to enable them to reach under-served areas outside of the city of Blantyre, where they are based. The funding allows the team to travel to reach people in need of eyecare who are unable to make the long journey from the villages where they live to the hospital in the city. In addition, we are also supporting the team with online training from specialists in the UK to support their continuous professional development.
3. Acquiring and Maintaining Medical Devices
The hospital in Blantyre has a number of valuable medical devices that have been donated over the years. Over time these devices need new components that can only be sourced from outside the country. By helping to arrange servicing of devices and sourcing replacement components, we are helping the team to extend the operational life of their devices by many years, allowing them to be used to help treat many more patients.
These are the key areas that we have identified as the best way to leverage your donations to make a difference to the eye health of the population of Malawi. If you are interested to hear any further details, please contact us using the email below.
What we need your help to do
Our goal is to restore the vision of as many people as possible in Malawi who are living with preventible blindness. All funds raised will go towards cataract surgery consumables, modern equipment for cataract surgery and funding outreach to rural villages in Malawi.
We estimate that a single cataract surgery in Malawi costs £20, a fraction of the cost in countries such as the UK and a small price to pay to restore a person's eyesight, enabling them to read, work and live unassisted.
